Codex I.6.2.5 Fechtbuch

Codex I.6.2.5 is a compilation of four early 16th century fencing texts purchased and bound circa 1566 by Paulus Hector Mair. It is currently held in the collection at the University of Augsburg.

The contents of the Codex are:
  • Anonymous, Augsburger Fechtordnung (1r-5v);
  • Anonymous, Ordnung und Chronik der Fechtbruderschaft Unserer Lieben Frau und Sankt Markus zu Frankfurt 1491 - 1566 (7r-20r);
  • Hans Medel's fechtbuch of 1539 (21r-42v); and
  • Martin Heemskercks' Fechter- und Ringerpaare (43v-49r).
Previously only accessible to ARMA members in black & white, the Codex can now be viewed in full color courtesy of the University of Augsburg. Click here to view page by page online, or here to download as a PDF.

Swedish scholar Andreas Engström of the Göteborgs Historiska Fäktskola (GHFS) recently published an online transcription of the Hans Medel fechtbuch and plans on an English translation. Both the source manuscript and Andreas' transcription may be accessed via the GFHS website.

For those who are interested in codicology and paleography, I did some cursory research on the Codex in 2004 and still maintain a site for it here.

I have also added a direct link to the color version of the manuscript under the "Mair Manuscripts" section at right.

Thanks to Jeffrey Hull for bringing the GFHS site to my attention.
